1903-10-24 (108lbs) Harry McDermott w rtd 6 (20) Jack Player, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: J. R. Smoult. Made at 108lbs with two-minute rounds in place, although Player made a useful start by the fourth round he was beginning to come under a considerable amount of pressure as McDermott worked away with both hands. After surviving a difficult fifth, Player, despite not being floored, was rescued from a heavy beating in the sixth when his second threw up the sponge.
With both men inside 108lbs, McDermott based his claim to the English 108lbs title on this win despite a lack of billing.
In America, on 31 October, Al Fellows claimed to be the American champion at 108lbs, but his known record does not seem to stand up.
