1903-10-24 (108lbs) Harry McDermott w rtd 6 (20) Jack Player, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: J. R. Smoult. Made at 108lbs, with two-minute rounds in place, although Player made a useful start by the fourth round he was beginning to come under a considerable amount of pressure as McDermott worked away with both hands. After surviving a difficult fifth, Player, despite not being floored, was rescued from a heavy beating in the sixth when his second threw up the sponge.
With both men inside the prescribed weight, McDermott based his claim to the English 108lbs title on this win despite a lack of billing.
In America, although Al Fellows claimed to be the American champion at 108lbs on 31 October his known record does not seem to stand up.
