1903-10-27 Jack Johnson w pts 20 Sam McVea, Hazzard’s Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Recognised as a ‘black’ title fight, Johnson had the best of it this time round as he pounded McVea at will and knocked him down three times on his way to an easy defence.

Johnson next risked his claim against Black Bill (nd-w pts 6 on 16 February 1904 at the Lenox AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
