1903-11-21 (124lbs) Spike Robson w co 4 (20) Bill King, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Billy Bell. While there was no championship billing attached, by his victory Robson certainly strengthened his claim to the English 124lbs title. Robson got away the best, slamming in body blows in the opening two rounds that were intended to slow King down. With Robson eager to finish in the third, King took advantage of the South Shields man’s impetuosity to bang home rights to an unguarded jaw that left his rival groggy. Although starting well in the fourth to have Robson seemingly in difficulties from punches to the jaw, King was eventually put on the defensive himself and after being dropped from shots to the head he was put down again and counted out with 45 seconds of the session remaining. On 14 January 1904, Owen Moran stated that he should be seen as the English 124lbs champion, and on 9 April of the same year Johnny Summers also claimed the title.
