1904-01-02 (140lbs) Jack Blackburn w pts 12 Jimmy Gardner, Central AC, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Jack Sheehan. Reported at a later date to be a contest involving the American 140lbs title, I have yet to trace the individual weights. The Boston Post stated that both men worked throughout and that clever blocking and jabbing were indulged in. While Blackburn’s reach enabled him to land the greater quantity, Gardner’s body punching was often seen to good effect, although it was a right to the jaw that had the man from Philadelphia over in the 11th round. Badly hurt, Blackburn got up and stalled through to the bell, but he had recovered enough to hold his own in the 12th before being given the referee’s verdict at the end of it.
