After beating the former champion in a match articled at 142lbs, Mellody claimed the ‘white’ version of the title at that weight. It had been a gruelling contest, with Mellody down in the second round and Matthews being dropped once in the fourth, three times in the seventh and twice in the 11th. Time and again Matthews was left staggering and reeling around the ring, and only his conditioning got him through to the final bell.
