1904-02-26 (148lbs) Martin Duffy w pts 20 Rube Ferns, Whittington Park Auditorium, Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA. Referee: Pat Early. Although Ferns fought gamely and several times had Duffy groggy he was always too tired to follow up any advantage. Ferns suffered from cuts almost from the opening bell and his efforts were further hampered when his nose was badly split in the tenth, following the only knockdown of the contest, before his left eye closed in the 11th. Subsequently, it was Duffy all the way, and while the result was unquestionable the crowd yelled for a draw due to Ferns’ outstanding gameness against all odds. Shown occasionally as a 145lbs ‘white’ title defence, further examination of the Chicago Tribune showed the fight to have been articled at 148lbs, a weight Duffy extended his claim to on winning after 20 rounds of the fiercest fighting ever seen at the venue.
