1904-03-25 (140lbs) Joe Gans w pts 15 Jack Blackburn, Eureka AC, Germania Maennerchor Hall, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Made at 140lbs with both men on the mark, Gans claimed the American title at the weight on winning. Although the aggressor throughout Gans’ punches lacked steam and his judgement was poor, while Blackburn merely appeared happy to make it to the final bell.
A short-distance fight for Gans thought to have been made at 140lbs came against Dave Holly (nd-w pts 6 at the National AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 27 June).
Although still claiming the 140lbs title, prior to Gans’ fight against Joe Walcott (140) at Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California on 30 September it was announced that no title was involved. The contest ended in a 20-round draw.
