1904-03-28 (140lbs) Joe Gans w pts 10 Gus Gardner, Arbeiter Hall, Saginaw, Michigan, USA. Referee: William Considine. Billed for the 140lbs title, Gans (139½) controlled the fight throughout using a left jab and countering right to the head to halt Gardner (135) as he rushed in. Gardner, who did most of the leading after staggering Gans in the first round, was almost down on several occasions but managed to make it to the final bell.
On 21 April, Gans outpointed Sam Bolen over 15 rounds at the Eureka AC, Baltimore, Maryland and although it was later thought to be a defence of his 140lbs title, with the latter coming in much heavier it could not have been.
A short-distance fight for Gans thought to have been made at 140lbs came against Dave Holly (nd-w pts 6 at the National AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 27 June).
Although still claiming the 140lbs title, prior to Gans’ fight against Joe Walcott (140) at Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California on 30 September it was announced that no title was involved. The contest ended in a 20-round draw.
