31 March (105lbs) Kid Murphy drew 25 Benny Franklin, Belair AC, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Referee: Joe Tipman. Billed for the American 105lbs title, and reported in some papers as a points win for Murphy, prior to the contest the Baltimore Sun stated that Murphy had been claiming the American 105lbs title for the past couple of years despite his record showing no evidence to support this statement. Reported as a battle that was fast and furious for the full number of rounds, Franklin had the better of the first seven sessions, both in landing the cleaner punches and blocking those that came his way. But from thereon Murphy was right in the fight and apart from being dropped for a moment in the 24th he was quickly back into the action. Possibly due to tiredness, for much of the second half of the contest Franklin remained in his own corner where he would take the best Murphy could throw at him while waiting to land a finisher. At the final bell, the referee’s decision seemed to please the vast majority, with Franklin happy to stake a claim to the title and earn himself a rematch.
