1904-04-29 (142lbs) Dixie Kid w disq 20 (20) Joe Walcott, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Duck Sullivan. Winning comfortably against the Kid (138) who was hanging on and in some distress, Walcott (144½) was disqualified for no discernable reason in the 20th round. As far as the crowd were concerned the punch in question was a legal one, being delivered above the kidneys, and the majority hooted long and loud.
Later, the result was disregarded and Walcott continued as champion when it was discovered that the referee had placed a bet on the Kid. At the same time, due to the chicanery involved, despite claiming the 142lbs title the Kid was accorded no recognition whatsoever and his career faltered when he was sent to prison for offences committed outside the ring before returning to boxing in September 1908.
