1904-06-13 (142lbs) Honey Mellody drew 20 Jack O’Keefe, Silver Bow AC, Butte, Montana, USA. Referee: Jim McDonald. Billed for the ‘white’ 142lbs welterweight title in the possession of Mellody, it was reckoned to be one of the best fights ever seen in the area as neither man stopped punching for the full 20 rounds. If they ever clinched, which they often did, they were still looking to get their blows in, and while O’Keefe did his best work at distance, Mellody would have been better off staying at close quarters where he was superior to the challenger. Both men took heavy punishment and both at times looked all in, but somehow managed to keep going. A rematch was called for immediately.
