1904-09-05 (130lbs) Battling Nelson w pts 20 Aurelio Herrera, Montana AC Arena, Butte, Montana, USA. Referee: Dunc McDonald. Made at 130lbs, right from the opening gong both men gave it everything they had and there was never a dull moment in what was a bloody contest. It was apparent from the start that Nelson would have to be wary of Herrera’s power and in the fourth round a right to the jaw sent him down for ‘nine’. Despite being groggy himself, Nelson took the fight to the Mexican on getting up and by the end of the session had turned the tables. Subsequently, Nelson battered away at close quarters, never giving his rival any respite, and fought every minute of each round with Herrera being in distress on several occasions. Having sprained his wrist in the fourth round made life even more difficult for Herrera, but he kept going in the face of incessant pressure to make it to the finish where he was a wide loser.
Nelson, who had come to the fore when beating Martin Canole (w co 18 on 20 May) and Eddie Hanlon (w rsc 19 on 29 July) in 20 round fights held at Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, a few months earlier, was soon claiming to be the top man at the weight in America and was looking to defend his claim against Young Corbett, Jimmy Britt or Terry McGovern.
