1904-09-05 (138lbs) Jimmy Gardner drew 10 Martin Canole, Queen City AC, Federation Hall, Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. Referee: Patsy Downey. Contested at 138lbs and involving Gardner’s ‘white’ title claim, the latter started quickly and knocked Canole down with a heavy right to the head in the 2nd. Despite injuring his left hand in the fifth, Canole fought back strongly and even dropped Gardner with a right-hand swing to the jaw before the contest ran its course. Three days later Gardner pulled out of a fight against Joe Gans, hinting that he was so disappointed with his performance against Canole he needed to take time out.
