1904-09-10 (144lbs) Jack Clancy drew 20 Bobby Dobbs, Ginnett's Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Billy Bell. Billed for the world 144lbs championship, during the opening six rounds Clancy (142) built up a good lead when driving in with straight lefts and never giving Dobbs (143) any respite. Dobbs came back some in the seventh, his right-hand work being very effective, and in the eighth Clancy’s left eye was swelling fast. At this stage of the contest, Clancy’s blows were lacking steam and in the 13th both of his eyes were in a bad way, but he continued to score with light lefts even though the 44-year-old Dobbs was fighting hard, especially with the right. Both were tired out by the 19th and although Dobbs made a determined effort to finish Clancy off he was unable to do so and the referee’s decision was well received. With Clancy returning to America, Dobbs claimed the 144lbs title but there is no evidence to be found that he ever defended it.
