1904-10-17 (116lbs) Joe Bowker w pts 20 Frankie Neil, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Scott. Billed for the world 116lbs title, although Neil (116¼) narrowly failed to make the weight the fight went ahead involving his championship claim and as expected it was top drawer. Almost from the start it was noticeable that Neil favoured the body while Bowker (116) looked to move in and out with lefts and rights. By the seventh the American’s features were showing signs of Bowker’s work and in the 13th both of his eyes were closing fast. Bowker always seemed to be one move ahead of Neil at this stage of the fight and though the latter worked hard he was unable to handle his rival’s clever movement at times. The last six sessions saw Bowker adding to his lead as both sides of Neil’s head came in for punishment and at the final bell the Englishman was a comfortable winner of the international title.
