1904-10-22 (147lbs) Bobby Dobbs w pts 20 Jack Kingsland, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Billy Bell. Originally made at 147lbs, Kingsland (149), who came in two pounds heavier, was conspicuous early on with powerful left leads before opening up with both hands, while Dobbs (142) took his time. Before too long Dobbs had seen all he needed to and began attacking Kingsland with powerful lefts and rights, cutting the latter’s left eye and generally assuming control. Although Kingsland also scored frequently with both hands, Dobbs was judged to have been the most accurate and therefore more deserving of the verdict. Following the contest, the winner would claim the English open title at 147lbs.
