1904-11-14 (142lbs) Buddy Ryan w co 1 (10) Honey Mellody, New Harlem Club, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Referee: Joe Pollock. Billed for the 142lbs title, the Chicago Tribune reported that while Mellody (142) was at weight, Ryan came in six pounds heavier. Ryan’s camp said that he came in one pound over the weight but eventually worked it off. Whatever the truth, the paper went on to say that Mellody was quite prepared to enter the ring knowing full well his title claim hinged on the result. The author of that statement, George Siler, also claimed that by his victory Ryan became the acknowledged American champion. Right from the opening bell Ryan went after Mellody, quickly having him down for ‘nine’ from a right hook to the jaw, and on getting up tee latter was immediately dropped again. Although Mellody again made it to his feet he was by now totally bewildered and a straight right to the jaw put him down for the full count before he was carried back to his corner still unconscious.
Having been matched in a return at 142lbs, at the same venue on 12 December, the fight was called off at the 11th hour over the question of weights, Ryan being unable to get down in time.
