1904-12-15 (138lbs) Jimmy Gardner w rtd 11 (20) Jack O’Keefe, Silver Bow AC, Butte, Montana, Colorado, USA. Referee: Dunc MacDonald. Made at 138lbs, Gardner successfully defended his ‘white’ title claim at the weight when outclassing O’Keefe, who unfortunately suffered a dislocated left hip in the first round but gamely carried on in great pain. By the tenth, with his face a bloody mess, Gardner finally caught up with O’Keefe, dropping him for ‘eight’ with a terrific right uppercut. O’Keefe continued to hold out before toppling into his corner to be retired at the end of the 11th.

Once again Gardner agreed to meet Joe Gans in San Francisco, this time on 27 January 1905, but it was declared to be off after he failed to cover the forfeit.
