1905-01-23 (114lbs) Owen Moran w pts 20 Digger Stanley, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England
23 January (114lbs) Owen Moran w pts 20 Digger Stanley, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the 114lbs world title and also involving Stanley’s Imperial British Empire claim at the weight, Moran (114) made a very good start when taking the fight to his rival before dropping him twice in the second round. After being dominated for a while, Stanley (113), using his superior reach and speed effectively, had come back strongly by the eighth, breaking through Moran’s guard with both hands and looking to take over. However, the ninth saw Stanley down again from a left to the head before fighting back strongly. By the end of the 13th Moran appeared to be well clear, but Stanley had other ideas and in the 16th he was fighting hard to get something out of the fight. Even when he injured his leg in that session, Stanley continued to meet Moran punch for punch right through to the final bell and although he failed in his objectives it had been a great effort.
