1905-03-20 (124lbs) Joe Bowker w rsc 12 (20) Pedlar Palmer, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the 124lbs English and world titles, Bowker (119½) eventually beat Palmer (123) in what the Sporting Life claimed was one of the best ever contests seen at the club. After a brief spar at the start, Palmer was dropped by a two-fisted attack to the head, but he was soon back in the fray and there were some brilliant exchanges right up to the tenth, with both men trading jabs and showing great movement to extricate themselves from dangerous situations. The tenth saw Bowker come to the fore, throwing punches from both hands and looking the fresher of the pair. In the 12th there was no doubting Bowker’s intent when putting Palmer down from a clip to the jaw early in the session, and although the latter gradually got to his feet he was soon down again, whereupon the referee stopped the contest.
