1905-05-01 (134lbs) Joe Fletcher drew 20 Young Joseph, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Made at 134lbs, Fletcher (133) quickly showed up well with the left jab while Joseph (134) looked to get inside and work the body. While there were no knockdowns, Joseph went close with a two-fisted attack in the ninth and Fletcher scored heavily to the head in the 11th to stagger his rival. Although Joseph was behind at this stage he boxed very gamely from there on in, making up a lot of lost ground by the close, and fully deserved a share of the points.
Despite there being no title billing as such, both men were claiming the English 134lbs title on the result. With Joseph quickly moving up the weight scales, and bearing in mind that Jabez White was fighting on the world stage, Fletcher’s claim looked realistic and he was joined by other men looking to stake a claim such as Freddie Welsh, who challenged all England.
