23 May (116lbs) Jimmy Walsh w pts 15 Willie Gibbs, Pythian Rink, Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA. With both men inside 115lbs, this should be seen as a defence of Walsh’s 116lbs American title claim. It was also reported in some papers as a catchweight contest. Whatever, despite Walsh having to work hard he took no risks against the limited Gibbs, who was clumsy and awkward, often throwing himself off balance when trying to land. He also transgressed the rules, being warned three times for using the illegal ‘pivot’ blow. Sensibly, against a man who was more effective on the inside, Walsh kept the fight at distance and won easily.

Although it was reported in the Daily Kennebec Journal that Walsh had been disqualified there was no mention of that elsewhere and in his next contest, against Danny Dougherty (nd-w pts 6 at the Knickerbocker AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 31 March) he was announced as being the 116lbs champion.
