1905-06-07 (158lbs) Hugo Kelly drew 10 Tommy Burns, Light Guard Armory, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Referee: Eddie Ryan. In a match made at 158lbs, the Detroit News stated that although limited to ten rounds and Burns being a couple of ounces over limit the fight had more to do with the championship than any other recently held in the region. During the opening three rounds Burns jabbed Kelly at will and tied him into knots by using clever footwork, that being before the strenuous dieting to make the weight caught up with him. In the fourth Kelly finally got down to business, two-fistedly belting Burns to the body. Kelly stayed with that tactic right through the seventh until the latter looked a spent force. However, in the eighth the pendulum swung as Burns came out fighting in a rejuvenated fashion, nearly taking Kelly out when raining in blows to head and body, before the tenth saw two tired fighters settling for the draw. The Detroit Times went on to say that whenever there looked likely to be a knockdown the police in attendance stood up to make sure that scientific principles were being exclusively employed and that neither man was looking to secure a result by a kayo.
