1905-06-12 (140lbs) Jimmy Gardner drew 20 Jack O’Keefe, Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Referee: William Bean. Made at 140lbs and involving Gardner’s ‘white’ title claim at the weight in what was a return match, O’Keefe was behind most of the way before staging a tremendous 15th round. Tearing into Gardner, who received a bad cut around the eyes, O’Keefe let rip with both hands and according to the referee it was his fantastic work rate in this round that earned him the draw. On 4 August, Gardner took on Rufe Turner over 25 rounds at the Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California. Having won by an 11th-round knockout after both men made 135lbs at 6pm, Gardner moved up to the welterweight division on being matched against Buddy Ryan. Interestingly, Turner had been Gardner’s first black opponent.
