1905-06-17 (145lbs) George Peterson w pts 20 Jack Clancy, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Billy Roche. Made at 145lbs, according to Clancy it was the English version of the world title he was putting up against Peterson, who was supposedly making his professional debut after faring well as an amateur. Peterson made a quick start, pegging away with the jab and moving around the ring at speed, while Clancy showed excellent blocking skills. By the third round, however, Peterson had decided that Clancy was vulnerable to right-hand swings to the kidney region and from there on in he worked the right from head to body with great effect.
It was no surprise that Peterson, who was deemed to have had virtually the best of every session, claimed the title at the weight on receiving the decision. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Clancy was exasperatingly slow, his chief objective being to avoid punishment.
