1905-08-25 (142lbs) Jimmy Gardner w rtd 15 (20) Buddy Ryan, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Billy Roche. While not reporting this as a title fight, the San Francisco Chronicle described Ryan as world champion with both men agreeing to make 142lbs. The finish came when Ryan, having unsuccessfully tried to claim a foul after being dropped by a long left to the solar plexus, got up and was subjected to all manner of blows before put down again prior to being retired at the end of the round. All bets were called off, but that did not stop Gardner claiming the ‘white’ title after his victory. It was reported that Gardner’s blocking was remarkable, but it was his straight left, which landed continuously and was backed up by left and right swings, that undid Ryan.
