1905-10-17 (158lbs) Jack Twin Sullivan w pts 20 Tommy Burns, Pacific AC, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: Charles Eyton. Taking into account his 20-round points win over Hugo Kelly at the Athletic Club, Kansas City, Missouri on 7 April 1904, Sullivan (153lbs) claimed the 158lbs title on the strength of this win over Burns, despite the Canadian coming in at 163lbs. Sullivan was Burns’ master throughout and by the end of the eighth round the latter’s nose was bleeding, he had one eye closed and was seriously inconvenienced by the considerable punishment he had received in the way of body blows. For whatever reason, Burns saw the head as his target and with Sullivan’s ability to duck and sidestep expertly he had little success in that area. There were no knockdowns and neither man was badly used up at the finish.
