1905-10-23 (122lbs) Joe Bowker w pts 20 Spike Robson, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the English 122lbs title, there was much confusion over the weights for this one. Officially, Bowker was shown as weighing in at 121lbs and Robson 122, but the contest, according to the Sporting Life, almost certainly belonged in the 124 or 126lbs class. Up against a tough opponent, Bowker once again showed his class, his excellent ring strategy keeping him out of trouble in the main. Even when he was caught he immediately came back. Right from the start Robson forced the fight, looking to get inside, and although he was constantly repulsed he never stopped driving forward. By the halfway stage, however, Bowker had built up a good lead, often scoring with two-handed deliveries, while occasionally having Robson bewildered by his tactics. The last few rounds saw Bowker breaking through Robson’s defences time and again with the left before the latter gave it one final try, but despite the Salford lad weakening he came home in style.
