1905-11-24 (142lbs) Mike Twin Sullivan w pts 20 Jimmy Gardner, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. Although decided at catchweights, both men were still inside 142lbs and Gardner, who was reported by the San Francisco Chronicle as being the ‘legitimate’ holder of the ‘white’ 142lbs title, forfeited his claim on the result. Sullivan was a revelation, using the left hand as a scoring punch and the right to block the best that Gardner could throw, including his lefts to the body, and when the latter stalled the Twin would be at him with the straight left. The only times that Gardner had his man going were in the 13th and 15th rounds when he unleashed his right swing to the jaw, and although the latter was badly hurt he managed to buy himself some time by stalling. While Gardner proved to be a disappointment, Sullivan showed himself to be far better man than his record suggested and well deserved the win.
