1906-01-04 (106lbs) Mark Verrall w pts 15 Ernie Godwin, Christian Street Gymnastic Club, Liverpool, England. Referee: Tom Gamble. Made at 106lbs, Verrall got off to a good start but after he had unintentionally gone low in the second round the referee was forced to give Godwin a short break in order for him to recupurate. When the contest was resumed it was clear that Verrall was the more skilful of the pair and he treated the audience to a top-class display of boxing before being adjudged to have won by a fair margin of points.

Despite being contested over two-minute rounds, Verrall claimed the English title at 106lbs nonetheless, challenging all England five days later prior to moving up a weight class shortly afterwards.
