1906-01-04 (106lbs) Mark Verrall w pts 15 Ernie Godwin, Christian Street Gymnastic Club, Liverpool, England. Referee: Tom Gamble. Made at 106lbs, Verrall got off to a good start but after he had unintentionally gone low in the second round the referee was forced to give Godwin a short break in order for him to recuperate. When the contest was resumed, Verrall, the more skilful of the pair, treated the audience to a top-class display of boxing before being adjudged to have won by a fair margin of points.

Despite being contested over two-minute rounds, Verrall claimed the English title at 106lbs nonetheless, challenging all England five days later prior to moving up a weight class shortly afterwards.
