1906-01-19 (142lbs) Joe Gans w co 15 (25) Mike Twin Sullivan, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jack Welch. According to the Philadelphia Item and San Francisco Chronicle, the fight was for a version of the title with Articles of Agreement calling for the men to come into the ring at 142lbs and ended after Gans landed heavily to head and body before smashing homa a left to the jaw that dropped Sullivan for the full count. Gans was on top for most of the contest, standing right up to Sullivan and continually hurting him with rights to the body, while using the left to open up the latter’s guard.
On 17 March, Gans again met Sullivan, this time at Chutes Park, Los Angeles, California and knocked him out in the tenth of a scheduled 25-round contest. Although billed as a 142lbs title fight, Sullivan came in six pounds over the limit.
Later in the year, on 23 October, it was reported that Gans had decided against continuing as a welter as he could comfortably make 133lbs and was happy to forfeit his title claim to Joe Thomas, whom he considered to be the best man at that time.
