1906-02-19 (128lbs) Seaman Hayes w pts 15 Dick Lee, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Made at 128lbs, both men started with left leads before Hayes (127), concentrating on the body, picked up the pace in the fourth round to twice have Lee (128) on his knees. Despite that, Lee came back strongly with the left leads being particularly effective and by the 13th there was little between the two fighters, although it was general felt that Hayes was ahead. Coming out strong in the 14th, Hayes made sure of the verdict when dropping Lee with a heavy right before dominating right through to the final bell.

Regardless of a lack of title billing, Hayes was now considered by those running boxing to be the English champion at the weight.
