1906-03-09 (158lbs) Hugo Kelly drew 20 Jack Twin Sullivan, Pacific AC, Los Angeles, California, USA. Made at 158lbs, with both men inside the weight according to the Los Angeles Times, the two leading claimants came together with a view to settling their championship dispute. It seemed that Kelly had a clear lead at the final bell and should have been awarded the decision, having outboxed Sullivan in most of the rounds and knocked him to the floor in the 14th for ‘eight’ with a right to the jaw. Kelly carried the fight to Sullivan in all but the last three sessions, landing effectively to head and body and showing an excellent defence. From the 18th through to the final bell Sullivan fought like a madman when trying to score a knockout, but even then he was thwarted at every turn.
