1906-03-19 (128lbs) Johnny Summers w pts 20 Seaman Hayes, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Advertised as being for the English 128lbs title, Summers (127¾) started with the left lead while Hayes (128) immediately went for the body as was expected and at the end of the sixth there was little between them. Having knocked Hayes down in the seventh with a right cross Summers opened up a bad cut above the Seaman’s left eye in the ninth and then took a breather until coming back with some vicious blows to the kidneys in the 12th. While Hayes was not to be taken lightly he was now fighting an uphill battle and in the 15th a short left hook to the head sent him to the boards. From there on in it was all Summers, scoring heavily with both hands, who continued to have the better of proceedings.
Despite the result, Hayes was still listed in the Sporting Life as being the English 128lbs champion in May of that year, the paper reporting that Summers was now concentrating on the English 126lbs title.
