1906-07-10 (142lbs) Joe Walcott w co 8 (15) Jack Dougherty, Lincoln AC, Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Maffit Flaherty. With the Dixie Kid in prison for offences committed outside the ring and Joe Gans thought to be back among the lightweights, Walcott reclaimed the American title and was matched against Dougherty. The Boston Post reported the fight as being for the championship, with both men inside the prescribed 142lbs. Up until the end of the seventh round it appeared that Dougherty was ahead and following the bell to start the eighth he launched himself into Walcott when driving for the body, a tactic that saw the latter swinging wildly. It would have been better for Dougherty had he backed away, but he did not and before too long a left swing connected with his jaw and down he went face first. Although Dougherty tried desperately to rise by the time he was on his knees, he had been counted out and that was that.
