1906-10-16 (145lbs) Honey Mellody w pts 15 Joe Walcott, Lincoln AC, Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Hector McInnis. Although billed as a title bout, the fact that Mellody and Walcott were contracted to meet at 145lbs did not please those who saw the championship weight as being 142lbs. It looked as though it was going to be an early night when Walcott dropped Mellody in the first round, but concentrating on the body the local fighter scored steadily with stiff lefts and rights to go to the front by the halfway stage. Although Walcott remained dangerous throughout he failed to turn things about and that proved to be his downfall. Afterwards, the general consensus among the pressmen was that only a return at 142lbs would satisfy all concerned and they were immediately matched up again at the lesser weight.
