1907-02-11 (145/147lbs) Honey Mellody w rtd 4 (15) Willie Lewis, The Athletic Club, Valley Falls, Rhode Island, USA. Advertised as a title fight at 142lbs, it turned out that Articles of Agreement had been signed for the contest to go on at 147lbs and it was at that weight the two men weighed in. Although Lewis showed he had a punch and some class in the third round, it was all over in the fourth after he had been put down by a right and left to the jaw and his seconds immediately threw in the sponge.
Mellody was now claiming the title at 142, 145 and 147lbs and his next contest saw him pitted against his old foe, Joe Thomas (nd-l pts 6 on 7 March 1907 at the National AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Despite it being contested over six rounds it was billed as a world title bout at 145lbs, with both men inside the weight. By this time, Mellody was being pressured to defend his title against Thomas, but knowing that the latter could not get below 145lbs he was demanding that the weight be set at 142lbs. This was strange as Mellody had made 145lbs for the first Walcott fight, but sticking to his guns the match against Thomas was put on ice.
