1907-03-25 (144lbs) Andrew Jeptha w co 4 (20) Curley Watson, Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Edward Humphreys. It was widely reported that Jeptha (141) claimed the English welter title following this win over Watson (142) at 144lbs, but his claim never really stood up due to the fact that it was contested over two-minute rounds and that he was a South African. While not gaining much recognition as the English champion, many saw Jeptha as holding the Imperial British Empire title at the weight. In the light of their previous contest, Jeptha knew that he could hurt Watson by working the body, and although the latter was scoring freely with the left as before the South African bided his time. The fourth round saw Jeptha’s plan come to fruition when, following up a swinging left to the head with a terrific right uppercut to the jaw, he dropped Watson heavily to the boards where he was counted out.
