1907-04-22 (158lbs) Sam Langford w co 4 (20) James Tiger Smith, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the English version of the 158lbs middleweight title, Smith (151) rushed out wildly at the opening bell and before the end of the round was badly cut over the right eye. Meanwhile, Langford (154), who had been taking a good look at Smith, began to open up himself, especially at close quarters, and in the fourth he was really letting the punches go. Still Smith endeavoured to mix it with his dangerous rival and after taking a terrific right to the head he was dropped heavily by a left hook to the jaw and counted out. Following his victory, Langford challenged anyone in the world at the weight. On 27 August at the Winnisimmet AC, Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA, Langford outpointed Larry Temple over ten rounds in a contest that was thought to carry his 158lbs title claim, despite him being above the weight.
