1907-05-30 Mike Schreck w rtd 21 (finish) Marvin Hart, The Casino, Tonopah, Nevada, USA. Referee: George Siler. With Schreck claiming the world title due to Tommy Burns’ inability to make a match with him, this was billed for the American (world in some quarters) title. Hart was the aggressor most of the way, nearly finishing Schreck off in the 18th round, but by then he was carrying severe damage to his right wrist. After fierce fighting in the 19th and 20th, with Schreck smashing in punches to head and body, Hart was pulled out by his corner midway through the 21st session, having been down several times. When Schreck was defeated by Al Kaufman (l co 7 on 29 August at the Auditorium Rink, San Francisco, California) it undoubtedly cost him a world title opportunity against Burns. Regardless of whether he bothered to pick up Schreck’s title claim or not, Kaufman’s continued good form, with successive victories over Dave Barry, Jack Twin Sullivan, Joe Grim, Battling Johnson, Fireman Jim Flynn, Fred Bradley, Terry Mustain, Jim Barry and Tony Ross, would eventually pave the way for a crack at Johnson in September 1909.
