1907-07-04 (145lbs) Honey Mellody w rsc 7 (10) Jim Donovan, Brown’s AC, Queens, NYC, New York, USA. Reported as a championship fight at 145lbs by the New York Times, with both men inside 143lbs (thought to be a misprint) according to the New York World, Mellody maintained his claim at the weight by defeating his English-born rival after the referee stopped hostilities in the seventh round. Earlier, Donovan had been saved by his ability to take punishment, when dropped a couple of times by hard rights to the jaw in the third, and he came back well before being floored in the seventh by a similar blow immediately prior to the stoppage.
