1907-07-04 (150lbs) Joe Thomas drew 20 Stanley Ketchel, Phoenix AC, Marysville, California, USA. Referee: Ed Smith. Made at 150lbs, with a 3pm weigh-in, Thomas almost lost his welterweight title claim to the charging Ketchel who threw punches for fun. Dropped in the 11th round and again in the 14th, a still groggy Thomas looked certain to lose, but on both occasions he managed to stall and wear out Ketchel while coming on strong himself in the last two sessions. Afterwards, the referee stated that he gave the draw because of Thomas’ extra class.
