1907-07-04 Tommy Burns w co 1 (20) Bill Squires, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: James J. Jeffries. Starting out as if he meant business, Squires (181) charged into Burns (180), who initially stood off before tossing in a long right hand to the jaw that dropped the Australian champion. Although Squires made it to his feet he was still groggy and was soon decked again by a similar blow. Getting up for the second time Squires was a sitting target and a short right to the chin put him down again, this time to be counted out on the 2.08 mark. On 10 July, England’s Gunner Moir challenged Burns to defend his title claim against him either in the USA or Britain. Moir had much support in Britain and it was clear that if Burns wanted worldwide recognition he would have to eliminate the British champion.
