1907-07-19 (142lbs) Jimmy Gardner w pts 10 Clarence English, Princess Rink, Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. Referee: George Brown. This was a fight that was thought to have seen both men inside 142lbs. Although there were no weights reported in the local papers, English was quoted as saying that he was well aware of the fact that in Gardner he was meeting the toughest man in the world at 140lbs. With English assuming a crouching stance against the upright Gardner the stage was set, but there was nothing really to write home about as the latter virtually controlled most of the action with straight lefts to head and body. Although English had his moments, especially when setting up some good attacks in the sixth, he was generally outmanoeuvred and outscored by Gardner.
