1907-08-03 (136lbs) Billy Stewart w pts 20 Jack Nelson, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: T. Murphy. Despite the lack of billing, the English 136lbs title was thought to be at stake in this one and it was Stewart who took advantage of the situation when showing superior power and skill in the opening seven rounds. Thereafter, however, both men gave as good as they got and by the final bell Nelson had almost made up the deficit as Stewart weakened badly during the last couple of sessions.
Stewart appears to have moved up in weight following the fight.
Prior to the NSC introducing the new 135lbs lightweight division, several men challenged all England, including Young Joseph (August), Johnny Summers (August), Joe Fletcher (August), Jack Ward (March 1908), Dick Lee (April 1908) and Bill Wood (May 1908), but none would contest the English 136lbs title before it virtually went out of existence on 11 February 1909, the day the NSC launched the 135lbs lightweight division.
