1907-08-15 (134lbs) Freddie Welsh w pts 15 Dick Lee, Welsh National AC, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. With both men inside 134lbs, Welsh later claimed that he won the English title on the result, but with two-¬minute rounds in play his claim would not have carried much weight outside Wales. Starting a hot favourite the unbeaten Welsh began slowly while Lee scored well with the left hand before his rival got going by the fourth to do his share of the leading. By that point Welsh was getting on top and after dropping Lee twice he went well clear, rattling up the points with both hands. According to the Sporting Life rare boxing was shown from thereon with the aggressive Welsh doing his best work at close range, punishing Lee badly at times, while the latter continued gamely and scored with good punches of his own. On 9 November, Joe Fletcher reiterated that he was the English champion at the weight, which was followed two weeks later by a similar statement from Jabez White. Having scored wins over Seaman Hayes and Joe White, Welsh packed his bags for America and after putting together some impressive victories over some of the best men in the world he came home in July 1909 to stake his claim to the new 135lbs Lonsdale Belt.
