1907-09-27 (135lbs) Joe Gans w pts 20 George Memsic, Naud Junction Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: James J. Jeffries. Billed for the 135lbs world championship, both men making the weight, Gans never really got out of first gear in this one until the 17th round. Memsic made a real fight of it, rushing Gans at every opportunity while doing plenty of holding and hitting. He also stood up remarkably well to full-blooded head punches that would have seen off many others. Realising he needed to do something to make sure of the decision, Gans came through over the last three sessions, throwing good, solid punches that Memsic did well to weather let alone fight back.
On 4 April 1908, in a six-round no-decision contest thought to have been made at 135lbs, Gans (138) knocked out England’s Spike Robson (128) inside three rounds at the National AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
