1907-11-01 (145lbs) Frank Mantell w co 15 (20) Honey Mellody, Dayton AC, Ohio, USA. Held somewhere between Dayton and Cincinnati, it was billed as a title fight according to the Boston Post and contested at 145lbs. The paper went on to state that the result was such a fluke that it was to laugh. However, fluke or not, Mellody, by his inability to defend at 142lbs, would not be considered as a champion from thereon. While there was no mention of the contest involving the title in the Dayton Journal, the 1987 Ring Record Book supported the view that it was. The fight had seen Mellody controlling most of the action coming into the 15th round. Although he’d had a few rocky moments along the way, it was something of a shock when he was attacked by right and left swings to the jaw before being counted out. At the end of the 14th Mantell had looked as though he had nothing left.
